What Does Tonsillitis Look Like?

Tonsillitis is characterized by symptoms such as sore throat, difficulty swallowing, swollen tonsils, fever, bad breath, and tender lymph nodes in the neck. In some cases, individuals may also experience headache, ear pain, and a hoarse voice.

Healthcare providers typically diagnose tonsillitis through a physical examination of the throat, checking for redness, swelling, or pus on the tonsils. They may also perform a throat swab to test for bacterial or viral infections. In some cases, blood tests or imaging studies may be recommended.

Tonsillitis is commonly caused by viral infections, such as the common cold virus or the influenza virus. Bacterial infections, particularly by Streptococcus bacteria (strep throat), can also lead to tonsillitis. Other factors like allergies, smoking, or exposure to irritants can contribute to the development of tonsillitis.

Treatment for tonsillitis depends on the underlying cause. Viral tonsillitis usually resolves on its own with rest, hydration, and over-the-counter pain relievers. Bacterial tonsillitis may require antibiotics to clear the infection. In severe or recurrent cases, surgical removal of the tonsils (tonsillectomy) may be recommended.

If left untreated, tonsillitis can lead to complications such as abscess formation in the throat, obstructive sleep apnea due to enlarged tonsils blocking the airway, rheumatic fever (in cases of untreated strep throat), and the spread of infection to other parts of the body. It is important to seek medical attention if symptoms persist or worsen.
