It’s not enough for the floor to look good – it must also withstand water, humidity, and temperature changes without deteriorating. If the floor isn’t properly treated, you risk mould, discolouration, or even structural damage. Understanding the Challenge: Why Moisture Is a Problem
Moisture can move through materials and accumulate beneath the surface if the floor isn’t properly sealed or ventilated. In rooms with high humidity – like bathrooms or laundries – this risk is especially high. Australia’s climate, with its mix of coastal humidity and dry inland heat, makes it even more important to choose the right materials and installation methods.
A properly built wet-area floor should:
- Prevent water from penetrating the subfloor.
- Allow any residual moisture to evaporate safely.
- Be easy to clean and resistant to water and cleaning chemicals.
Step 1: Choose the Right Materials
Start by selecting materials that are rated for wet areas and comply with Australian Standards (such as AS 3740 for waterproofing in wet areas).
- Subfloor: Use concrete or cement-based sheeting that can handle moisture. Avoid particleboard or MDF, which can swell and break down when wet.
- Waterproofing membrane: A continuous waterproof barrier is essential. It should cover the entire floor and extend up the walls to form a watertight “bath.”
- Floor covering: Tiles, vinyl, and epoxy coatings are popular choices. If you prefer timber, opt for a dense hardwood like teak or blackbutt and ensure it’s properly sealed.
Step 2: Prepare the Substrate and Ensure Proper Fall
Wet areas must have a floor that directs water toward the drain. In bathrooms, this means creating a fall of about 1–2 cm per metre toward the waste outlet. This prevents puddles and water pooling in corners.
Before waterproofing, check that the substrate is smooth, stable, and free of cracks or dust. Any unevenness can compromise the waterproofing layer and lead to leaks later on.
Step 3: Apply the Waterproofing Membrane Correctly
The waterproofing membrane is the most critical layer in your floor system. It can be a liquid-applied membrane, a sheet membrane, or a combination of both. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions and ensure the product is approved for Australian conditions.

- Timber: Leave expansion gaps at the edges and treat the surface with a moisture-resistant oil or polyurethane finish.
Step 5: Finish and Maintain the Surface
Even the best floor needs regular care. The surface treatment protects against wear and moisture but must be renewed periodically.
- Tiles: Clean grout lines regularly and consider applying a grout sealer.
- Vinyl and epoxy: Use mild cleaning agents – avoid abrasive powders or harsh solvents.
- Timber: Reapply oil or sealant as needed, and always wipe up spills immediately.
Proper maintenance not only extends the life of your floor but also keeps it looking fresh and prevents hidden moisture damage.
Step 6: Check Ventilation
Even a perfectly waterproof floor can’t handle moisture problems alone. Good ventilation is essential to let humidity escape. Install an exhaust fan that vents outside, ideally with a humidity sensor, to keep the air dry and prevent mould growth.
