What Is Emergency Power Lighting?

Emergency power lighting is a system that automatically switches on when the main electricity supply fails. Its purpose is to provide enough illumination for people to evacuate safely and for critical operations to continue for a limited time.

There are two main types:

  • Exit and escape lighting – highlights exits, stairways, and corridors so people can find their way out.
  • Safety lighting – provides general illumination in areas where accidents could occur, such as workshops, hospitals, or industrial sites.

  • Central battery or generator systems supply power to multiple lights from one source. These are common in large facilities and make maintenance easier, though installation is more complex.

Modern systems almost always use LED technology because it’s energy-efficient, long-lasting, and reliable – all crucial factors when power is limited.

Why It Matters

Emergency lighting isn’t just about convenience; it’s about safety. In a crisis, darkness can cause panic and accidents. A properly installed system:

  • Makes escape routes visible, allowing calm and quick evacuation.
  • Supports critical operations, such as in hospitals, data centres, and emergency services.
  • Prevents injuries, especially in stairwells, corridors, and work areas.

Even at home, a simple emergency light can make a big difference – for example, in hallways, garages, or rural properties where power interruptions are more common.

Regulations and Maintenance

In Australia, emergency and exit lighting must meet specific performance and testing requirements. Systems must activate automatically, provide adequate brightness, and operate for at least 90 minutes during a power failure. Regular testing is mandatory – typically every six months – to ensure batteries and lamps are functioning correctly.

Many modern systems include self-testing features that automatically check battery health and report faults. This makes compliance easier and ensures the system will work when it’s needed most.

While not legally required in private residences, having emergency lighting at home can provide peace of mind. Options include:

  • Rechargeable LED lamps that switch on automatically during a blackout.
  • Compact plug-in emergency lights for hallways or staircases.
  • UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) units for computers, modems, or essential devices, keeping them running briefly during outages.

These solutions are easy to install and can make a big difference when the lights suddenly go out.
